Report
The sport of Box Lacrosse (also known as Indoor Lacrosse) was invented in 1931, with the need of Ice Hockey Arena owners in mind, filling the Arenas when Ice Hockey season was over in the Spring. That year the International Professional Lacrosse League (IPLL), featuring four teams in Ontario and Quebec in Canada was founded. The league lasted just two years as the league first planned to expand to USA by transferring the Cornwall Colts franchise to Boston, and then adding teams in Buffalo, Cleveland, Chicago and Detroit, all cities near Ontario and Quebec in North East and Midwest USA. More American cities expressed interest, namely Baltimore, Brooklyn, New York, Philadelphia, Syracuse and Washington, D.C., again all in the vicinity of the North East USA.
In the end, however, the second season of the IPLL was planned to feature only two of those American cities: New York and Boston, along with three of the four original 1931 IPLL teams: Montreal Canadiens, Montreal Maroons, Toronto Maple Leafs (all teams with the same name as National Hockey League teams – NHL) plus expansion team Toronto Tecumsehs. The owner of the New York Rangers NHL team (Col. John S. Hammond) was awarded the New York team, and would play in Madison Square Garden and George Fink, owner of Madison Square Garden of Boston, was awarded the Boston team, with players from the defunct Cornwall Colts distributed among the two teams. The two teams could not, however, agree to terms for the upcoming season with the Toronto and Montreal teams and withdrew before the 1932 season started.
This was not, however, the end for Professional Box Lacrosse in the Eastern USA and Canada, as the Four team IPLL played on for another half season and the two USA teams started a new venture, also in 1932, the American Box Lacrosse League. This was the start of the Great Depression in USA, and the ABLL decided to play its’ Indoor season in Professional Baseball stadiums, partly to fill empty seats during the Baseball offseason, which was attractive to the owners of the National League and American League in Baseball, but also due to miserable conditions for fans sitting in Ice Hockey Arenas during the summer, something which impacted on the attendance of the ill-fated IPLL in Canada. Games were also to be played in the evening, under floodlights, a new idea in Baseball, which started in 1931.
The ABLL team owners were more “Baseball men” than “Lacrosse men” but they nevertheless promoted the league vigorously. Tommy Burns (born Noah Brusso) was a former boxing champion and owner of the New York Yankees Lacrosse team. The Baltimore team, however, was the only one based in a city with a big Field Lacrosse tradition. Six teams would play a 32-game season: New York Yankees, New York Giants, Boston Shamrocks, Baltimore Rough Riders, Brooklyn Dodgers and Toronto Maple Leafs. The team names were all readily recognisable to the American and Canadian public: Toronto Maple Leafs one of the biggest Canadian Ice Hockey teams in the NHL; Brooklyn Dodgers, New York Yankees, New York Giants all names of Major League Baseball teams as well as teams in the National Football League and its’ rival the American Football League (AFL); Boston Shamrocks was the name of a team in the AFL also. Baltimore Rough Riders had the Field Lacrosse tradition of Baltimore to draw upon, and a name borrowed from the Canadian Football League (Ottawa Roughriders).
The initial interest in Box Lacrosse in USA was evident when 8,000 turned out to watch Montreal Canadiens (1931 IPLL Playoff Champion) defeated Toronto Maple Leafs (1931 IPLL regular season champion) 9-7 on 10 May 1932 in Madison Square Garden, New York. There was plenty of hype before the game and the ABLL was thrilled by the attendance. Boston Shamrocks signed Princeton University head coach Al Neis a month before the season, which was the earliest allowed by the league to sign players and coaches.
The ABLL opened on June 2 1932 when 10,000 watched New York Yankees defeated Toronto Maple Leafs 11-9 at Yankee Stadium, huge for a Lacrosse game, but small for a Baseball Stadium, and less than what the league’s owners anticipated. 8,000 watched Brooklyn Dodgers win 14-4 versus the Yankees at Ebbetts Field the next day. After the initial hype and novelty died down the attendance plummeted. Baltimore, even though stocked with local Lacrosse stars in a city with a tradition of Field Lacrosse, and also the most successful team in the league, could only draw 3,000 on average. Within two weeks the New York Yankees and Toronto Maple Leafs were dropped from the league on 16 June 1932 and while there were considerations to replace them with teams in Philadelphia and Atlantic City, New Jersey, they never went ahead because the Atlantic City team would have had to have played indoors, which was less than suitable to the organisers.
Baltimore Rough Riders were the dominant team, and even though the other three teams were evenly matched, Baltimore’s dominance was a deterrent even to fans in Baltimore, and the league folded on 8 July after 10 games of a 32 game schedule. Baltimore continued playing, forming a four-team league in the Baltimore Area, and New York Giants also appear to have continued playing through the summer, playing exhibition games versus teams along the Canadian border. Baltimore continued playing exhibition games also, ironically including two which it lost to a team not admitted earlier in the season to the ABLL. Atlantic City Americans played exhibitions in preparation for representing USA in the 1932 Summer Olympics. The Atlantic City team was made up exclusively of Native Americans and played a dozen games that Summer, winning all 12, including two by scores of 13-6 and 14-5 versus the Baltimore Orioles, a team made up primarily of ex-Baltimore Rough Riders.

About Softball Ulster League 2022
Softball Ulster was founded in 2007. The 2022 season is the 15th year of the Softball Ulster League and features a record 9 teams, with the addition of Belfast Softball Club (BSC) Cyclones, Lisburn Hawks and Belfast Wolfhounds and return of Belfast Angels after a Covid-Virus break. [References: 1-2]
After eight games each (Single Round Robin) the teams split into a Upper Division (Division A) of five teams and a Lower Division (Division B) of six teams including newcomers Bangor Barracudas and Lisburn Eagles – Second Teams of the Buccaneers and Hawks. With two new teams joining Division B the teams only carried forward results from games versus teams in their own Division for the second half of the season in both Divisions. [References: S-1]

Weekly Recaps
Week 1 (1-3 May 2022)
BSC Brawlers met Belfast Cubs in a game featuring the top two teams of 2021, when both finished on 34 points with 6-2 records at the top of the table, Belfast Cubs having a slight advantage on Runs Difference. The opening weekend of 2022 also barely separated the teams with BSC Brawlers winning 18-17 in an extra eighth inning after the two teams finished level after 7 innings. The other Sunday game saw 2015 Champions Belfast Sliders winning 21-13 versus the newest BSC team, Cyclones. Saturday’s games were good wins for Bangor Buccaneers (33-18 against the Belfast Angels) and the second BSC team Smokin’ Aces (35-6 versus Lisburn Hawks). [References: 1-4]
Week 2 (8-9 May 2022)
Week 2 in the Softball Ulster League witnessed a 51-4 victory for new Belfast Softball Club team the Cyclones, over another new team the Belfast Wolfhounds (Cubs second team). BSC’s second team the Smokin’ Aces also won, 28-3 versus the Belfast Angels and the Belfast Cubs also won, 51-0 versus a third new team Lisburn Hawks. On Monday 9 May in the only game which featured veteran teams, the BSC Brawlers triumphed 19-10 versus Belfast Sliders at Henry Jones Playing Fields. [References: 5-6]
Week 3 (15-16 May 2022)
The two Belfast Softball Club veteran teams the Brawlers (3-0) and the Smokin’ Aces (2-0) remained the only undefeated teams after three weeks of the 2022 Softball Ulster League season as Brawlers triumphed 34-5 at Lisburn Hawks and Smokin’ Aces had a bye week. The third BSC team, newly started Cyclones were 2-1 after defeating 43-24 at Bangor Buccaneers (1-1). Also on 2-1 were veteran teams Belfast Cubs and Belfast Sliders after they both won in week 3 – Cubs 19-9 at hosts Belfast Angels in Hydebank Park on Sunday 15 May, and Sliders the following Monday with a big 49-4 triumph over Belfast Wolfhounds over 6 Innings also at Hydebank Park. Angels and Wolfhounds were both seeking their first victories as were Lisburn Hawks. [References: 7-10]
Week 4 (22 May 2022)
By the end of week 4 the BSC Brawlers (79-1 winners over Belfast Wolfhounds) and stable mates the BSC Smokin’ Aces (17-11 winners versus the third BSC team the Cyclones) were both still undefeated. Belfast Cubs (bye week) and Bangor Buccaneers (shock 22-14 winners at home to Belfast Sliders) were both on 2-1 while the Cyclones and Sliders losses dropped both teams back to 2-2. The biggest news of the weekend however, was Lisburn Hawks maiden win, 16-12 at Belfast Angels, leaving the newcomers on 1-3. [References: 11-12]
Week 5 (29 May 2022)
By the midway point of Phase 1 BSC Brawlers and BSC Smokin’ Aces were both still undefeated on 4-0 as the Brawlers had a bye week in week 5 and the Smokin’ Aces won a close encounter with the Belfast Sliders 27-25. The race for a top 5 finish and therefore a Division A spot for Phase 2 (the second half of the season) became more heated as the Belfast Cubs triumphed 29-13 over the BSC Cyclones in a match-up between two mid-table teams, both on two wins coming into the game. Bangor Buccaneers cemented their position as a surprise package with a 33-6 defeat of the still winless Belfast Wolfhounds to go 3-1 and just one game behind joint-leaders Brawlers and Smokin’ Aces, an unfamiliar position for the North Down team at this stage of the season. [References: 11-13]
Week 6 (5-6 June 2022)
By week 6 the two Belfast Softball Club veteran teams, BSC Brawlers and BSC Smokin’ Aces had built up a 2.5 game lead over nearest challengers Bangor Buccaneers. Brawlers had gone to 6-0 after a 48-1 defeat of the Buccaneers while the Smokin’ Aces had won 18-13 versus Belfast Cubs and 60-4 versus Belfast Wolfhounds. Cubs also lost 12-13 to Belfast Sliders as the two teams sat in mid-table on 3-3 alongside BSC Cyclones, also 3-3 following a 23-12 victory over Lisburn Hawks who were now 1-4. There was now a mid-season break for the Softball Ulster Carrie Trundle Cup. [References: 14-15]
Week 7 (20-22 June 2022)
On Monday 20 June Smokin’ Aces suffered their first defeat of the season, 7-10 versus Bangor Buccaneers, who improved to 4-2, with the Smokin’ Aces dropping to 6-1. The same night Belfast Sliders improved their chances of reaching Division A in the second half of the season, winning 39-12 at home to Lisburn Hawks to improve to 4-3 as the Hawks fell to 1-6.
The following Wednesday Belfast Cubs and BSC Cyclones joined Belfast Sliders on 4-3 with victories over Wolfhounds (47-1) and Belfast Angels (16-6). The Wolfhounds (0-6) and Angels (0-5) both remained without a victory.
This all meant going into the Final Week and Rescheduled Games on Week 9 to come that the qualification places for Division A would come down to the games between Belfast Cubs and Bangor Buccaneers as well as Belfast Sliders v Belfast Angels, and BSC Brawlers v BSC Cyclones. [References: 16-18]
Week 8 (27 June 2022)
Belfast Sliders 18-12 victory over Belfast Angels was the only game completed in Week 8 as rainouts affected both Belfast Cubs v Bangor Buccaneers which was postponed in the fourth inning with Cubs leading 11-4 and Lisburn Hawks v Belfast Wolfhounds called off due to the weather. Both games were to be played in Week 9. [References: 19]

Those teams joined BSC Brawlers (6-0) and BSC Smokin’ Aces (6-1) in the Top Division (Division A) for the second half of the season. [References: 20-22]
Week 10 (10 July 2022)
The two bottom teams were due to face each other looking for their first victories of the season, but Belfast Angels forfeited their game with Belfast Wolfhounds. [References: 23]
Unknown Dates
On two unknown dates the BSC Brawlers won 16-7 versus the Belfast Angels and 15-9 versus BSC Smokin’ Aces to finish the first half of the season undefeated on 8-0. [References: S-1]

Kegs had lost in weeks 2 and 3 to TNT (19-26) and Batpak (12-18) but recovered with three straight wins. TNT had also lost twice, on 3 May (8-14 at Batpak) and 17 May (2-16 at home to Dodder), while Batpak lost to Dodder Dynamoes for the second time in the SL Premier Division season 2022 after going down 2-16 at home in week 6. [References: S-1 to S-6]
Weeks 7-10 (7 June-5 July 2022)
By the end of the regular season, when each of the six teams had played each other home and away, the Premier League was split into a Championship Group and a Relegation Group, each of three teams, to play each other once more for a 12 game season.
Dodder Dynamoes as would be expected given the teams history, topped the Regular season standings with eight wins and two losses, alongside Batpak, also on an 8-2 record. Kegs took third with a 6-4 record. Dynamoes managed the feat despite a shock loss in week 8 to Castleknock Bearcats who finished the regular season 3-6 plus one forfeit. Hippetys Hippie Monsters propped up the table without a win and TNT missed out on the Championship Group due to a week 8 forfeit to Kegs, finishing one victory behind the Dublin 4 team. [References: S-1 to S-6]
Weeks 11-13 (Playoffs – 26 July-2 August 2022)
After both teams had defeated Kegs in weeks 11 and 12, Dodder Dynamoes and Batpak squared off on the 9 August 2022 for a winner-takes-all final match. Both teams were sitting at the top of the standings on 9 wins and 2 losses after Batpak had defeated Kegs 6-4 on 26 July and Dynamoes had won 22-2 at the Kegs the following Tuesday. Kegs finished the season 6-6. [References: S-1 to S-6]
Meanwhile at the other end of the table, Hippetys Hippie Monsters, despite not winning a game all season, defeated both their Relegation Group rivals, TNT by 17-12 and then Castleknock Bearcats by 26-6 but still finished last. The final Tuesday of the season saw TNT defeated Castleknock Bearcats 22-13 to finish with a 6-5 and 1 forfeit record. [References: S-1 to S-6]
The game which would decide the title was won by Dodder Dynamoes 12-7 at Batpak as the Dynamoes defeated their rivals for the third time in the 2022 Softball Leinster Premier Division, in fact the only team to beat Batpak at all during the SL season. For the record Dodder Dynamoes finished the season 10-2 and Batpak 9-3. [References: S-1 to S-6]
About Softball Leinster Premier Division 2022
The Leinster Softball League is a Coed Slowpitch Softball League in Leinster Province, Ireland. It is currently at a 5:5 Male:Female Ratio although in its early days it was 9:1 Male:Female. There was a Female Slowpitch League from 1997-2002 which was League for Competitive Females from the top Divisions in the Leinster Softball League.
The most successful clubs over the entire history of the League have been Dodder Dynamoes (the oldest Softball team in Ireland) and Marlay Martyrs (both based in South Dublin suburbs – Marlay in Marlay Park, Rathfarnham (D14) and Dodder Dynamoes originally from Dodder Park, Dartry and now nomadic.
The League is Coed, originally 8:2 Ratio of Men:Women, until it levelled to 5:5 twice – in the late-1990s and in 2017.
The 2022 Softball Leinster Premier Division Season started with six teams, as in 2021, with Marlay Martyrs taking the season out, and being replaced by promoted Castleknock Bearcats. Temple Bar Hippetys merged with their B team becoming Hippetys Hippie Monsters. [References: 2]

Out of the running were Ashbourne Giants B on 3-10, who had a 27-2 victory at Cork Cosmos 1; an 11-10 win over Ashbourne Titans and 12-9 victory at home to Mariners Vikings as they went 3-2 in July. Both Cork Cosmos teams pulled out of the league and folded, conceding their remaining games. [References: Results and Standings 1]
In the B2 League, it was tight at the top with Mariners Baseball Vikings (10-3) one game ahead of Red Rox Baseball (8-3) thanks to victories at home to Dublin Spartans B (12-5); at Ashbourne Stags (18-3) and two walkover wins at Cork Cosmos 1. These wins however, were sandwiched between losses to Belfast NorthStars (11-15 on 3 July) and 9-12 at Ashbourne Giants B (on 31 July). Red Rox remained their nearest challenger for the B2 pennant with a walkover win versus Cork Cosmos and a huge 34-11 defeat of Belfast Buccaneers. Ashbourne Stags (7-6) and Dublin Hurricanes B (6-5) remained in the playoff picture as the Stags followed losses to Ashbourne Titans (13-14) and Mariners Vikings (3-18) with walkover victories against Dublin Spartans B and Cork Cosmos. Dublin Hurricanes B meanwhile, defeated Belfast Buccaneers 17-14 and then lost to Mariners B 7-12. Belfast Buccaneers improved to 5-7 with a 10-8 victory over Mariners B followed by losses to Hurricanes B and Red Rox and then a shock 21-12 over Comets. Weeks 19-22 (August 2022)
In a very close B1 League Pennant race, Belfast NorthStars extended their winning streak to nine games before the last weekend in August with a 15-0 victory over northern rivals Belfast Buccaneers. The NorthStars stood at 13-1, while in second place the 11-2 Mariners B had a 13-12 win at Red Rox and benefitted from a walkover versus Cork Cosmos. Ashbourne Titans, like Mariners B extended their winning streak to four games with triumphs over Dublin Spartans B (15-0) and Vikings (12-2) to stand on 10-4. Half a game behind the Titans on 9-4 and with a three-game winning streak were Comets who had a good month, defeating Dublin Hurricanes B 18-5, Vikings 13-11 and Red Rox 11-9. Ashbourne Giants B, already out of the running picked up a walkover at Cork Cosmos. [References: Results and Standings 1]
The B2 League race was a three-team affair with Mariners Vikings leading the way on 11-5, Red Rox in second on 9-5 and Ashbourne Stags on 9-6 in third, although Belfast Buccaneers were putting together a push for the playoffs on 8-8 after a three-game winning streak. Dublin Hurricanes B had perhaps too much left to do on 6-8 and Dublin Spartans B were already eliminated from playoff contention on 2-12. Buccaneers had won twice over Dublin Spartans B (18-4 and 13-12 in a double-header in Belfast) after losing to Belfast NorthStars and then had a walkover versus Cork Cosmos 1 to break even on the year. Ashbourne Stags likewise put up a three-game winning streak also with a walkover versus Cork Cosmos 1. Leading the way in the B2 League, however, were Red Rox who suffered close losses to B1 League challengers Mariners B and Comets before a walkover against Cosmos 1; and the B2 Leaders themselves the Vikings who lost to Comets and Titans of the B1 League. Comets Baseball (Monaghan) Baseball Ireland Team 2016-Present

About Comets Baseball
Comets Baseball moved to Peace Link Park in Clones, Co. Monaghan shortly before the 2016 season started, thus requiring the team name to be changed from Cavan Comets to simply Comets Baseball. In their first season in Monaghan they went 4-18, finishing fourth of four teams in the B League North Division, thereafter steadily improving, going 5-13 in 2017, finishing 6th out of 7 in the B League North. A slight drop in form in 2018 ( 3-15, sixth of 7 teams), was followed by a 5-14 season in 2019 (finishing fourth of four in the B-2 League) and then a 4-5 season in the 2020 B League North Division, finishing 3rd of four teams. 2022 was a huge inprovement for the team, going 8-3 in the B League Upper, finishing second of five teams, and reaching the B Playoff Final, before losing 7-9 to Mariners Baseball B team.
