League: Irish American Football League Playoffs
Craigavon Cowboys American Football
Craigavon Cowboys season Report 1986
The Craigavon Cowboys played their first ever fully kitted game with pads and helmets in Shane Park, Lurgan, on May 19 1986 in the first ever fully kitted games in Northern Ireland between two Irish teams. Craigavon Cowboys lost that match 0-46 in what was an inauspicious start for a season that ended in triumph.
Another defeat in the American Independence Day Summer Bowl Festival in Dublin on August 6 followed, where they lost to Dublin Celts in the Semi-Finals of a four team Tournament played with a rolling clock and 20 minute quarters.
They again lost heavily to Belfast Blitzers in the Final Week on September 1, 0-40 but on September 27 they defeated Coleraine Chieftains 33-0 which enabled them to advance to the Shamrock Bowl, which was arranged after the season had ended. There they won 6-2 versus the Dublin Celts with a Touchdown by Nigel Trimble with only four minutes remaining, having gone 2-0 down in the first half having conceded a safety.
The Cowboys thus went down in history as the first winners of the Shamrock Bowl, Ireland’s Super Bowl. The turnaround was largely attributed to Chuck Ebron, a new Coach brought in from USA for the second half of the season.

Belfast Blitzers
Belfast Blitzers Season Report 1986
Belfast Blitzers played the first ever fully-kitted game of American Football between two Irish teams in Northern Ireland on May 19th 1986 when they won 46-0 versus Craigavon Cowboys at Shane Park in Lurgan.
On the 1st of June they played Dublin Celts in Dublin in the 1st Leg of the Capitol Bowl, losing 7-46, and despite losing the tie overall 31-66 on aggregate they did become the first ever team to defeat the Dublin Celts, when on June 22nd they won 24-20 in the 2nd Leg in Belfast.
They again played the Dublin Celts on July 6th in Dublin as part of the Summer Bowl American Independence Day Tournament, losing to their rivals in the Final after defeating the Coleraine Chieftains in the Semi-Finals.
In the penultimate week of the season in Carrickfergus as part of the Carrick Festival, they defeated the hometown Cougars 55-6. This set them up nicely for their match against the Dublin Celts for the All-Ireland Championship the following week which they won 7-0, evening the score 2-2 on head-to-head with the Dublin team.
This was the last match they played in 1986 as they declined to take part in the Shamrock Bowl, which was arranged following the season, as the considered themselves already Champions having won both the All-Ireland Championship and League titles.

Dublin Celts vs Craigavon Cowboys
Shamrock Bowl I 1986
Craigavon Cowboys won the first ever Shamrock Bowl 6-2 against the Dublin Celts at St. Mary’s Rugby Club in Templeville Road, Templeogue, Dublin 6W on October 5, 1986.
The Cowboys conceded a safety in the first half when Carlos De La Garza sacked Craigavon Quarterback Jeff Donaghy in the Cowboys endzone, but with only four minutes remaining player-of-the-match (Most Valuable Player) Nigel Trimble ran in the only touchdown of the match to seal a 6-2 victory for the Cowboys according to the Belfast Telegraph (1).
An alternative winnning Touchdown memory is given by the Celts’ Kevin Sharkey, who in an unpublished Celts history shared by American Football international’s John Gunning, has Jeff Donaghy making a pass to John Mullally who ran it in for the winning TD.
The Shamrock Bowl title going to Ulster meant the province reigned supreme with Belfast Blitzers winning the All Ireland Championship the previous month and the league title.
