Report

The West Coast Series of Softball Friendlies was extended in 2009 with Cork Hammerheads visit to Tralee to play a local team on 21 June, coming away with two victories. The Kerry team (Kerry Green Sox?) also planned a return visit later in the year as well as two two more Galway-Cork series of Challenge matches, but there is no evidence of any of these happening. The following year the first proper League season on the West Coast, involving Galway Tribes, Cork Hammerheads, Limerick Originals and West Clare Dolphins took place.

Report

Galway Tribes and Cork Hammerheads agreed to play two series of Challenge matches either side of the Irish Open Softball Tournament in Limerick in August 2008. In the first series in Cork on 19th July , Galway went 7 runs down in the first innings, but clawed their way back to lead, although they eventually lost by one run. The second match saw Cork win by four runs as the effect of a 3 hour journey to Cork took its toll on the Galway players. The second series in Galway on 13th September was forfeited by Cork due to lack of numbers.

Report

Belfast Brawlers won a very competitive Softball Ulster League in 2013 by one game from Belfast Sliders which was not decided until the final days play when Sliders lost by one run to Belfast Cubs. The Cubs went on later that day to win another game by a single run against Belfast Aviators and with Jordanstown Elks forfeiting their last match to the Belfast Aces it meant the Top 4 read Belfast Brawlers (10-2) Belfast Sliders (9-3), Jordanstown Elks (8-4) and Belfast Cubs (8-4). The difference between the four teams at the end was Belfast Brawlers doing the double against Belfast Cubs, winning both Home and Away (Road) Games.

The other three teams in the League failed to win a match against the top four (excepting the Aces forfeit win over the Elks on the last day. The difference between theses three teams was the Aviators double win over the Belfast Braves, as the Final Standings at the foot of the table read: Belfast Aviators (3-9), Belfast Aces (3-9) and Belfast Braves (1-11).

About

The Softball Ireland Brian Walshe Cup is the second tournament in Irish Slowpitch Softball after the Softball Ireland National Club Championship in the Order of Merit [Reference: 13].

It was previously known as the ISA Championship (Irish Softball Association 1990-1991) IBSA Cup Championship (1992-1996), IBSA 6:4 Cup (Irish Baseball and Softball Association) from 1997-1998, the IBSF Cup (Irish Baseball and Softball Federation) from 1999-2001, and the ISA Cup (Irish Softball Association 2001-2003). It then became the Softball Ireland Cup in 2004, before being renamed the Brian Walshe Cup in 2008

Brian Walshe

Brian first played Softball for the Oddsox in Tymon Park, Dublin 24, in 1991, at 15 years of age, accompanied by his dad, having being delighted to find out that Softball was played in Ireland. He asked all the right questions, and it wasn’t long before he was into the strategy of the game.

Soon he took up umpiring, and in 1993 moved from Oddsox Red to Oddsox Green, as there was a shortage of Pitchers. He excelled here, and found himself on the Ireland team, being the starting Pitcher for the National Team at the European Championships in 1998, 2000, and 2002.

He became Softball Director of the Irish Softball Association (2001-2002), and was ivolved in UCD Softball in a big way, as both Player and Coach. He passed away in 2003 just after taking up the role of managing the Irish Squad, still only 27. [Reference: 25]

Report Division 1A

After a four month delay to the start of the 2020 season due to the COVID-19 Coronavirus Outbreak, the Softball Leinster Schedule was finally released in July [Ref: 3-4]. A reduced number of teams were able to sign up for a mini-season, with Base Devils, Dublin Bay Packers, Hippie Monsters, Renegade Titans, Thunderbolts and Wicklow Wolves making up Division 1B. [Ref: 2]

Dynamites (Dodder Softball Club) won the Division 1A Conference title with a 100% record having defeted Renegade Beachers, themselves undefeated up to that point, 24-7 on the Final Day of the season on 2 September 2020. Chuggers finished third and Marlay fourth as all matches went to form.

Report

The Softball Ulster 2019 season was down to 5 teams from 6 in 2019, following the loss of the Belfast Angels.

At a little over halfway, the Aces led with a 4-2 Wins-Losses record, however both the Belfast Brawlers and Belfast Cubs had better records, standing at 3-0 each, putting them minus 0.5 games behind in the standings (i.e. 0.5 games ahead). Belfast Sliders were on 2-4 and Bangor Bucs on 0-6.

By the end of the season the Brawlers had finished out with five more wins, including two close crucial ones against the Cubs (14-10 and 22-20). In a tight race for second the Cubs finished on 5-3, the Aces 4-4 and the Belfast Sliders 3-5.

It was the Brawlers fifth Softball Ulster League Pennant in a row. The Belfast Sliders were the last other team to win it in 2015.

Report

Marlay Martyrs and Brazen Hussies met in the first Final of the Leinster Softball Association Female League in 1997, having had only Co-ed Leagues prior to that. The two teams had finished top of the six-team League with identical 9-1 Wins-Losses records, and after winning one game each against each other during the season it was no surprise that the Final was also close, with Brazen Hussies coming out on top 18-16.
