Recap

The Donegal Volleyball League played its first ever season in 1992. The Ladies League was played over at least three gameweeks, with five teams entering. Milford ‘B’, and Twin Towns (Ballybofey-Stranorlar) were joint top on six points each having completed the league phase, with Tristar Castlederg, from Co. Tyrone, in third on four points with a game in hand versus bottom team Milford ‘A’ who lost all three of their games at that stage. Letterkenny completed the line-up with one win from their four games. While there is no mention in the newspapers of a Playoff system to decide the title, there was one in the Men’s League, played parallel to the Ladies League.

RECAP

As part of the Millennium celebrations in Belfast City, a Street Volleyball tournament was part of a series of events organized by Belfast City Council as part of the weeklong City Centre Sports New Millennium celebrations. After Cycling, Athletics and Basketball events outside Belfast City Hall, the Street Volleyball competition, the first of its kind ever in either Ireland or Britain, featured Men’s and Women’s U21 teams from Campbell College Belfast, Larne Grammar School (Co. Antrim), Craigavon Aztecs (Co. Armagh) and Enniskillen Blockbusters (Co. Fermanagh). This tournament would have been unthinkable given the security situation in the area around Belfast City Hall even just a few months previously and the event was a welcome return to normality and sport.

Craigavon Aztecs won the Women’s Tournament, defeating Campbell College Belfast on points (25-12, 23-25) and then a sweep of Enniskillen Blockbusters (25-12, 25-19). Enniskillen Blockbusters and Campbell College Belfast tied the third fixture 25-15, 15-25, with the Belfast team winning the deciding third set 31-29.

The Men’s Tournament saw a three way tie between Enniskillen Blockbusters (who defeated Craigavon Aztecs 25-20 and Larne Grammar School 25-19 but lost to Campbell College Belfast 23-25); Campbell College Belfast (who defeated Craigavon Aztecs 25-23 but lost to Larne Grammar School 20-25) and Larne Grammar School (who won 25-20 versus Craigavon Aztecs). a three-way tie-breaker was needed to separate the teams which the Westerners from Enniskillen won with 73 total points scored ahead of Campbell College Belfast’s 70 and Larne Grammar School’s 69.

Recap

The Donegal Volleyball Association was set up in October 1991 and following the first All-County Blitz in February 1992, the first competition of its’ kind in Volleyball in Co. Donegal, the first ever Donegal Volleyball League was played over three separate Game Weeks in April and May 1992 with Playoffs to follow at a later date. 11 teams in all entered with Milford, Twin Towns and Tristar Castederg all entering two teams each. Other entrants were Lifford, Letterkenny, Green Swifts Rockhill, Bruckless and Carrick-on-Shannon in Co. Leitrim’s wonderfully-named Wooly Jumpers.

Undefeatede Section winners were Milford B and Tristar A with Twin Towns A and Green Swifts Rockhill also making it through to the Semi-Finals. The results of the Semi-Finals and Final are currently unknown.

Aer Lingus PM won in three sets versus Galway PM.

Week 3 Recap

DVC Abu and DVC Bravo both won their home games in Colaiste Bride in Clondalkin by three sets, although DVC Abu had to fight all the way in the third set versus Galway PM, who lost their second of the season. Kilkenny Spartans PM, playing in their first ever competitive Volleyball Ireland league fixture were the defeated team in Bravos match which followed.

About Volleyball Ireland Premier Men 2021-22

The Volleyball Ireland Premier Men is the highest level of Men’s Volleyball in Ireland. With the lifting of COVID restrictions, the League is about to restart in October after a two-year layoff.

Baseball Ireland B League 2021

Report

After 10 weeks of the 2021 Baseball Ireland B League, Mariners Baseball B team were top of the Upper League with a 100% record, eight wins from eight. Comets Baseball, based in Clones, Co. Monaghan, were in second on 4-1, while Ashbourne Giants B (3-3), Belfast NorthStars (3-4) and Ashbourne Stags (1-6) completed the Upper League line-up. The B League Lower was dominated by Ashbourne Titans on a perfect 9-0 record, and then fighting for second place with 2 games between them were five teams: Cork Cosmos (4-3), Dublin City Hurricanes B (3-6), Red Rox (3-6), Dublin Spartans B (2-7) and Belfast Buccaneers (2-6).

About the Baseball Ireland B League

The Baseball Ireland B League is the second level of Adult Baseball in Ireland. The League is in its’ 16th season, having started in 2006 with four teams, 9 years after the Irish Baseball League started in 1997. The 2021 season features 11 teams, the most ever, with new additions Red Rox Baseball, based in Portmarnock, Co. Fingal / North Co. Dublin and Ashbourne Titans, as well as the welcome return of Belfast NorthStars who sat the 2020 season out.

Season Report

By the end of June 2021 in the Baseball Ireland A League Ashbourne Giants and Mariners Baseball (Shankill-Greystones) were out in front on identical 4-1 records, each teams only loss coming against each other. Dublin City Hurricanes had managed one victory versus Dublin Spartans, leaving them on 1-3 and the Spartans winless on 0-4 as the two old masters of the game in Ireland found themselves outplayed by the Leinster Regional Teams Ashbourne (Co. Meath) and Mariners Baseball (based in both Greystones, Co. Wicklow and Shankill, Co. Dun Laoighaire-Rathdown/ Co. Dublin).

Ashbourne Giants and Mariners Baseball were still locked together in first place on 6-1 records by the August Bank Holiday Weekend after victories over the Spartans (twice for the Mariners and once for Ashbourne) and the Hurricanes (once for Ashbourne). Dublin Spartans got their first victory of the season with an 11-1 win in Corkagh Park versus eternal rivals Dublin City Hurricanes, leaving both teams on one win apiece.

By the beginning of September the A League was complete and Ashbourne Giants took the A League Pennant thanks to a 3-2 decision on Tiebreaker Rule 2 – Head to Head. Both the Giants and rivals Mariners Baseball had finished 10-5 at the top of the Standings with Dublin City Hurricanes putting together a late run to finish in third on 6-9, defeating both Ashbourne Giants and Mariners Baseball twice. Dublin Spartans made a late run of their own, winning against Ashbourne and their firece rivals Hurricanes, but it was the Hurricanes who made the third playoff spot.

ABOUT BASEBALL IRELAND A LEAGUE 2021 SEASON

The 2021 Baseball Ireland A League season shall be the 15th of the A League since it spilt into two Leagues (A and B) in 2007, and the 24th in total since the Irish Baseball League was founded in 1997 (there were earlier attempts at starting an Irish Baseball League from the 1960s onwards – see the International Baseball page on Eirball for more details as well as Josh Chetwynd’s book “Baseball in Europe”. The same four teams as in 2020 shall be playing a 15 game schedule each (each team playing the other 5 times), with the top 3 making the playoffs.

Report

Galway Softball Club, founded in 1998 and one of the oldest Softball teams in Ireland, has after 23 years, and thanks to generous sponsors, managed to field enough teams to form the first Galway Softball League in history. While there was a Cadet Baseball League back in 1970, this is the very first time since Softball Ireland was founded as the Irish Softball Association in 1989 that such a sanctioned league has taken place in Galway or West of the Shannon River. The four teams are An Púcán Base Invaders; Kenny’s Bookshop Hardbacks; Irishscores Hit Squad and Megadale Aqua Blasters.
