Report

________________________________________________________

Irish Lacrosse dates back to the 19th Century when the first leagues were played, with teams mostly in the Belfast area. It died out around the First World War and Michael Kennedy writing in the History of Irish Lacrosse has speculated it may have been due to the number of players called up to serve in the Army and also possibly due to the rise of the GAA and Irish Nationalism – Lacrosse would have drawn most of its players from the Protestant Upper Class.

From 1930-1970 an Irish Ladies Lacrosse Association played international fixtures with England, Scotland and Wales and ran a School Challenge competition.

The third phase of Irish Lacrosse began after the millennium, with interest sparked by a certain American Comedy Film.

The Irish Lacrosse League started in 2009-10, with UCD the first winners, and repeating the feat in 2010-11. Dublin Bay Prawns won the league in 2011-12, before UCD Unicorns won back the title in 2012-13.

From 2015 the league would become a spring league with the Newtownards Cup played as a pre-season Cup over Autumn in order to facilitate the entry of newer players. Dublin Bay Prawns would win the title that year and Dublin Lacrosse Club would finally get their hands on the title in 2016.

The first chapter in the re-emergence of Lacrosse in Ireland ends there as the two non-University teams merged for the 2017 season and in 2018 became Railway Union Lacrosse Club as they played in the famous Hockey and Cricket grounds in Sandymount.

Report

The Irish Softball Association was formed in 1989 and started the Leinster Softball League the following year. By 1996 the league had grown to 5 Divisions or Levels and 60 teams.

The 1st Division was the top Division and where some of the oldest teams in Ireland fought it out, including the original team Dodder Dynamoes, Marlay Martyrs and Oddsox. Each Division was divided into East, Central and West Conferences with Inter-Conference play and end-of-season playoffs to decide the title.

All of the teams in this period were based in Dublin, with the Marlay Park, Rathfarnham, based Martyrs beating Dodder Dynamoes 25-3 in the 1996 Final. The 1997 Final saw BatPak, based in the Northside defeat Marlay Martyrs 11-6 to win the Championship.

For the 1998 season the League was divided into an East and West Section with the Top Half of each Section qualifying for the second-half  Primary Conference and the bottom half playing in the Secondary Conference. Marlay Martyrs A would win the title back that season, with Oddsox in second. A Similar format was followed for the 1999 season with the number of teams expanded to 16. Marlay Martyrs A would again be the Champions finishing 3 points ahead of Dodder Dynamoes.

Following the 1999 season the league was re-organised with the Primary Conference and Secondary Conference making up two Separate Divisions: Premier 1 & Premier 2, with the lower divisions renamed Senior, Junior and Minor.

Report

_________________________________________________________

From 2004-2012 Ireland competed in the B-Tournament in the European Championships, and twice winning promotion to the A-Tournament, before the loss of Home Ice meant they could no longer compete.

In 2004, they finished top of Group A with a perfect 8-0 record, winning 13-4 in the Semi-Finals against the Czech Republic before losing 9-2 to Finland in the Final, although winning Promotion in the process.

2005 would see Ireland finish with a 4-5 record in the A-Tournament and in joint 6th.

In 2006 the Irish team would finish with a 3-6 record, losing the relegation playoff 5-4 to France.

Back in the B-Tournament for 2007, Ireland would finish top of Group A on 6-0, but lose the Promotion Playoff 9-7 & 9-2 to the Czechs. After winning the Placement Playoff 9-7 against Latvia, Ireland would win the Final 9-4 against Spain.

In the A-Tournament again for 2008 Ireland would finish joint bottom with a 1-8 record and be relegated.

Once again in the B-Tournament for 2009, the Irish would finish joint second in their Group on 7-2, before once again beating Latvia in the Playoffs 9-2, and then going down 9-3 to the Netherlands in the Place 3 Playoff, who would go on to beat Russia in the Final.

In the 2010 Tournament, Ireland would finish runners-up to Latvia in their group with 5 wins and 1 loss, before beating Slovakia 9-2 & 8-2 in the Playoffs, and again losing in the Semi-Finals to the eventual winners, this time Italy on a scoreline of 6-5.

For 2011, Ireland would finish joint top of their group on 6-1 with England, before losing the Playoff to them 8-4, and then in the next Playoff, losing to Hungary 6-4. Once again, for the third year running, Ireland would lose in the Semi-Finals to the eventual winner, Russia this time, 6-3.

Following a disappointing 2012 where Ireland finished bottom of their group on 1-6, they would lose Home Ice, after Dundonald Ice Bowl was no longer available for Curling, and be unable then to compete in the European Championships until returning to the C-Tournament in 2017.
